Is this any way to treat the network's best comedy? Somehow, that doesn't seem to bother ever-optimistic East Cleveland native Yvette Nicole Brown, who plays ever-outspoken divorcee Shirley on the series about a band of misfits at a community college.
That has been what's made this such a great journey. I've never been part of a show where it seemed the fans were just as important as the writers and the performers and the producers. The good news about Thursday's fourth-season premiere is that, well, it's on Thursday. Banishment to Friday might have been viewed as the programming dean's way of expelling Brown and her co-stars. Thursday is NBC's established night for successful comedies, and it's where "Community" always has aired.

Add to this daunting mix the realization that "Community" has been consistently overlooked by the Emmys and other awards that supposedly recognize the best TV has to offer. Surely that must faze she who is Shirley. If everything was as it was supposed to be, it would have been like, 'What's this new experience? It wasn't really surprising, considering how vocal he'd been about his problems with Community, and by this point, the rest of the cast had begun to stand out, so losing him wasn't that big of a blow.
If anything, the people he'd clashed with probably breathed a little easier with him gone. However, he left during the filming of season four, which meant some last-minute tinkering had to be done with a few episodes. In addition to Harmon, the Russo brothers, and Chase, a number of other talented contributors left the show. While some might argue these departures came from solidarity for Dan Harmon, or opportunities to explore other employment, it's a safe bet they all sensed Community was circling NBC's drain.
Even with all this doom and gloom, hope persisted that Community still had life left. For starters, it was renewed for a fifth season, surprising pretty much everyone. Even more surprising, Dan Harmon came back. In addition, everyone who'd left returned—even Chevy Chase albeit as a hologram in one episode. The show weathered the storm and carried on smoothly, right? More troubles lay down the line.
One half of Community's popular Troy and Abed duo, Donald Glover surprised fans by opting not to stick around for the end of season five. He only appeared in a few episodes before leaving to pursue other acting opportunities, as well as his burgeoning music career as Childish Gambino. His exit impacted the show more deeply than Chase's departure—and it meant having to hire, integrate, and win over fans with a replacement character of some kind, which isn't an easy task.
In the aftermath of these events Pierce has died from his leg wound, Annie is institutionalized due to her guilt, Jeff lost an arm after trying to put out the fire, Troy severely injured his larynx trying to destroy the Norwegian Troll doll by eating it while it was on fire and Shirley has become an alcoholic. The only one unscathed was Britta who dyed a streak of blue in her hair which Jeff points out is something she did, not something she experienced. The Abed of that timeline suggests that they somehow find a way to return to the "prime" timeline and replace the study group there.
Out of black felt he cuts out black Van Dyke shaped beards and passes them out to the other members. He refers to them as goatees and asks them to wear it as a symbol of their evilness until they can grow a real one. Most of the group rejects this idea, too traumatized by their own fates. However, Troy puts on his felt beard, and he and Abed perform their signature handshake saying, " Evil Troy and Evil Abed ". As the groups third year continues, Abed and Troy are shown to be growing distant.
Evil Abed begins to subtly influence Abed to further his own agenda " Contemporary Impressionists ". Sometime later, Star-Burns seemed to have died in a meth-lab explosion and a lawyer missing his right arm delivered his video will to Abed, possibly foreshadowing the arrival of Evil Jeff " Course Listing Unavailable ". After inciting a riot at school at Star-Burns wake, the group is expelled from Greendale.
They all gathers in Troy and Abed's apartment to commiserate which ends up mirroring events from the housewarming party. Due to the gloomy atmosphere, Shirley contemplates drinking again. When the pizza they ordered arrives, Jeff suggests rolling a die to choose who will get it and once Britta volunteers she is immediately smitten when she sees Toby the pizza guy.
Abed wonders if the timeline they are in now is the Darkest Timeline since they have all been kicked out of school. Troy rejects the idea, insisting that they will all survive their expulsion since they're all alive, and they still have each other. Troy's speech raises the spirits of the group, causing Shirley not to drink.
After he compliments Britta, she quickly loses interest in Toby and avoids the fate from her timeline " Course Listing Unavailable ". After the group clears their name and are allowed to return to Greendale, Abed sinks into a depression since Troy was forced to join the Air Conditioning Repair School.
Evil Abed appears to take over his body, dons a felt goatee and attempts to recreate The Darkest Timeline. He causes Britta to become depressed causing her to consider dying her hair. Evil Abed gets a bone saw , intending to make the Prime timeline Jeff just like his own one armed Jeff. However, when he encounters Jeff in the courtroom, he finds himself moved by the speech he is giving about friendship and selflessness.
The network also benched Parks and Recreation last season; but when the show returned, its ratings made a significant jump. Like, anywhere else on the primetime grid, for example. If this worked on NBC once, it could again, especially now that the network has sunk even further in the ratings. As with Community , the network has yet to announce the timeslot and premiere date for either series, but NBC could very well clear out a block of programming sometime in the spring to premiere Community with one of these new shows. These days, 88 is the magic number of episodes needed for a show to be sold into syndication, which is when the money really starts to roll in.
