Avoid the patrols Stealth To sneak in, enter the grounds through the back gate in the northeast section of the compound, then look to the right and pick the master-level door. Once inside, head down the stairs.
Around the corner is a guard and an archer ; one is patrolling while the other is sitting at a small table. They must be killed to safely escort Thorald out, and if you can do so quickly and quietly you should be able to prevent the guard in the next room from responding. Moving past the next guard and into the far room you will find the Northwatch Interrogator , who must also be killed to safely release Thorald. You won't need his Northwatch Keep key since you already unlocked the back door, but be sure to help yourself to the contents of the treasure chest.
Speak to Thorald and he will be released from his shackles after a few moments to follow you, stopping to pick up a weapon along the way. Even though Thorald does not sneak, you can still slip by the previous guard who should still be oblivious to the jail break if you haven't made a lot of noise. The garrison Assault This is definitely the more profitable method, as the Thalmor soldiers at Northwatch will be equipped with leveled steel, elven, glass weapons and armor.
If you opted to bring Avulstein with you, it is likely that Vidrald will die, and Geirlund is level 1 and essentially doomed. They wear leveled heavy and light armor respectively and carry leveled weapons. The haul taken from the dead Thalmor troops will be worth far more than your actual reward, and there's so much good loot available that you may wish to bring a follower to help you carry it all even if that's not normally your style.
If you chose to let Avulstein come, then he and two mercenaries will be waiting for you behind some rocks near the fort; go talk to him and they'll begin their attack.
There are four Northwatch guards patrolling the grounds and three Northwatch archers patrolling the walkways above who will all turn hostile when you enter the grounds. The fort is pretty straightforward once you're inside; just press on ahead and kill every elf in sight. You'll pass through a mess hall with a bar where you can find a copy of the One-handed skill book , Morning Star, v1 , and further on down in a small room on the bottom floor of a big room you can find a Thalmor mage carrying the Northwatch captain's key and the Two-handed skill book The Legendary Sancre Tor.
As usual, keep an eye out for treasure chests along the way. Ask Question. Asked 10 years ago. Active 8 years, 11 months ago.

I feel like there must be a peaceful way to solve this quest. That being said, I don't think it has to do with that response: I said "Battle-born" to that guy and he simply treated me in a more friendly way afterwards. OK, good to know that's not the problem.
I haven't checked their farm yet; maybe there will be something there. Honestly, based on the dialogue between you and the guards, where they say you have to have an order from the Imperials themselves, I feel like you have to work your way up to a decent position in the Legion before you can take this route. I know tullius has to have something to do with it. I went thorugh the item codes and found something called the imperial order.
They forget to add the text to the letter. Add a comment. Active Oldest Votes. To do it, you can try one of the following: Imperial Legionnaire Armor - Doesn't exist , of course. Legates wear the heavy version of Imperial armor. Light or Heavy Imperial Armor - Does nothing. Asking General Tullius - He says no. Completing the Imperial Legion questline - Tullius still says no. Adding the Imperial Order via console - Doesn't change the Thalmor's dialogue options. Improve this answer. I can't get why bandits attack me when I'm a badass Nord covered in daedric plate.
Even funnier when you say "Do you think I got any money? Did anyone try to be invisible? Tried with invisibility potion and got past guard. Too bad I didn't have many potions.
Try this in combination with skeleton key for easy unlocking as you are running past guards. It talked to General Tullius. He told me to send an order to Northwatch Keep. Having the same problem. Spoke to the Jarl and all memb ers of his cabinet. No l uck with any of them. Also having trouble going with the "less bloodshed " route. I originally ho ped to do some persuading , sneaking, or even bribe ry as something different -- but not sure what to do next.
Maybe I need to visit the Thalmor Embass y? If you want to do it peac efully you need a complet e Imperial Legion set of armor. Imperial Armor won 't work, you need the leg ionnaire set. Weapon does not matter, boots, glove s, armor, and officer hel met. You approach the fro nt guard and demand they release the prisoner and he'll appear outside. He's standing at ready with his axe out, but th ere are no enemies nearby.
I can talk to his comp anions, but not to him. Anyone else run into this? Avulstein and thoral d are both attacking me a nd are my enemys I wanted to go alone, but I wanted to try both opt ions. I successfully comp leted the mission when I joined Avulstein, but I'l l probably try again from an extra save file and g o it alone. The proble m I had after Thorald was released from the chains , is that I accidentally hit him once and received a bounty and both of the m wouldn't stop attacking me.
Happened multiple ti mes. Good quest, but that part was annoying. Reset the keys to default and still can't steal an y books I tried it alone and just killed all the guards be cause they had a bad atti tude anyway. Lots of loo t that way too I finished the quest by g oing and getting Thorald myself and went back and talked to his mom and she told me she'd give me th e weapon that was forged for Thorald and then the quest completed and no we apon was given to me I only had my weapon in my inventory.
I chose to have Avulstein meet me at Northwatch Ke ep, but then right after he joined my party that I would rather wait for morning to attack. I went back to Whiterun to see if he'd r eturned home, but he wasn 't there, either. Does an yone know where he went? Also, when I talk to gua rds at Whiterun, Markarth , etc. I haven't even sta rted to beat any Thalmor, because I've lost Avulst ein. If anyone si trying to fi nd the armour mentioned a bove, there's no such arm our as "Imperial Legion s et of armor" in the game so Azlac is giving false info.
I keep getting attacked b y Avulstein. What the hel l is going on? I kinda started th is quest really early? Le vel 3 to be exact, bad ar mor and such Also Avulstein and his b uds died No matter what I do, as s oon as I get down to wher e Thorald is, he attacks me. They let him loose an d he attacks for no reaso n. I get passed all the g uards and even if I don't go near Thorald, he goes ape shit and won't leave me alone and then Lydia attacks and kills him no matter where I leave her.
Any ideas? When I get to north watch keep I can only talk to Avulsteins companion, and Lydia goes all crazy att acking avulstein and a re d bar appears above him l ike an enemy. I think I talked Avulstei n out of causing any bloo dshed. Thus I did not ha ve his assistance when co mpleting this quest.
If you made the same decisio n, you CAN complete the q uest on your own. Here i s what I did: If you h ave a companion I had Ly dia , have her wait outsi de the keep on the easter n side. I safe distance is a good idea so the gua rds don't go after her, b ut not too far so she can jump in and help defend you when you and Gray-Man e make your escape.
Then head toward the south m ain entrance to the cour tyard of the keep. The g uard will tell you to go away. Fralia Gray-Mane in Whiterun is convinced that her missing son, Thorald Gray-Mane, is still alive and being held captive. She asked me to visit her home to speak privately about the matter.
Please, if you truly wish to help, meet me at my home. I'll tell you the whole story. I just know it. I can feel it in my heart. You have to believe me. Please, visit me at my home.
I can tell you the whole story. Let's speak at my home, where we can be alone, unwatched. It's not my fault they turned their backs on the Empire, or their mule of a son raised arms against it.
And yet they want to heap the fault on my family's good name? Fralia is convinced our family is somehow at fault for the loss of her son. There's no reasoning with these people anymore.
They won't even do their own dirty work now, eh? Well, you won't get the better of me! Now tell me where my brother is! Thorald Gray-Mane? Fighting for the Stormcloaks, disappeared and believed dead? You really don't know anything about this, do you?
I'm not working for anyone. So you don't know anything about my brother? Then what are you doing here? Why are you so tense? I am not going to let that happen! Are you What can I do? The Imperials have him, and are keeping him somewhere. But I don't know where. Those damned Battle-Borns They're hiding it. They practically taunt us with it.
They must have some sort of proof! There's got to be something in that house of theirs. I don't dare leave the house myself. So I need your help. Then we can figure out how to get to him.
I'm sorry for doubting you, friend. You have my thanks. This is my brother's life! I won't let them take it away! I beg of you, look for proff of Thorald's capture. The Battle-Borns have it, I just know it. He was fighting for the Stormcloaks, and went missing. Everyone assumes his dead. But he's not.
The Imperials captured him, and they're holding him someplace. The Battle-Borns know where. I'd go and search their house for proof, but they want me too.
I'd be captured, and then we'll never know what happened to him. So I need someone to find that proof for me. I know those Battle-Borns have it. They'd be hiding it, of course. Wouldn't want it to get out that they've been lying this whole time. But you might be able to butter them up enough to lower their guard. I just You'd understand if you had children. He's afraid of being taken as well, so he hasn't left the house.
All he talks about is Thorald. Please, help Avulstein if you can. Something has to be done, or we're all going to lose our minds. You'll join us, won't you? Thorald can't be left to those We'll get in and out as fast as possible. I'll see you there. Without bloodshed. You, alone, reasoning with the Thalmor? That's madness, friend. You're serious, aren't you? I'll bring him back myself. I'll give you a chance.
