What is the average number of books sold

If so many of them accept so many marginal projects, God bless them. May our motivations always be the writing, good writing. Ever better, the best we can produce. I Have held day jobs and only completed my first of 6 books — my memoir -at age My personal gratification was and is that of achieving my life goal to write and publish. If a person desires success — financial necessity can hinder creativity.

Your comment speaks to me as a dedicated author with controlled ambition. Nice to know you Mr. Good luck! Thank you for the reality check, Steve. Most helpful. And thank you, Tina Radcliffe for the suggestion he revisit this post.

I seem to have missed it the first time around. Are those numbers even available? Thank you for the reminder that, though publishing is about the numbers, the said numbers vary depending on a number of factors. This is an enlightening post, Steve. Good article. I guess I should suspect somewhere between 3, and 30, sells. Either way I should expect a few thousand at least. Kinda scary. Hopefully it sells well. I would like to publish my fourth book which is now ready for editing and formatting.

It is to be sold by my company, American Purchasing Society, Inc. It may be sold by other distributors. Can you help us find a commercial publisher who will be interested? Thirty years ago I set out to write my first novel. That is how Stephen King started out. As of that conversation he was unable to convince any other colleges to add his textbook to the curriculum.

A update now states copies with lifetime sales of 3, Thanks, Steve. I assume the figures cover tradpub authors. If they are, then I guess remaining independent is a no-brainer for me.

Happy new year! There is a basic method by which you compute an average — it is standard math. As a result, it is not a difficult thing to define. How a publisher defines success has nothing to do with what the average book sells.

Otherwise, rename the title and the question you pose to readers in order to actually align with what the article is about. Could you please tell me how many books very small indie publishers sell — particularly fiction in translation?

I am an author who writes under a pen name and I only self-publish. I published my first of seven books less than three years ago. My 7th and most recent book was published 5 months ago. Total book sales for all seven books total over , this is only my ebooks sales, does not include my audio sales or paperback.

You would think I would be considered a big selling name or something, but I am not a big deal in my genre. Thanks for showing there is life in self-publishing.

Olivia…but at what price point? I know a lot of Indie authors have big sales at. Sales would depend also on the genre. Some fields are really crowded — romance, fantasy, science fiction, mystery would be at the top. But if one looks at Amazon, erotica books sell a ton. A top author of fiction will likely sell far more than the average so you will see sales sometimes top a million copies. But not everyone is J K Rowling. I wrote a little years ago but found my lack of success disappointing.

So I changed my focus to art, painting specifically and I learned some lessons in that field that I think could be applied to the world of publishing. As a fledgling artist I thought I would earn my living by painting portraits, get famous and have collectors pay millions for my work and I could retire wealthy. As with writing and in fact many fields like singing, acting, sports etc. There are just so many people doing the same thing and only a tiny percentage find success as super stars.

But I learned how to leverage what I did. My original business model was to hang a shingle, display a portfolio of my work and take commissions. Then I got some really good advice. It generally took me about a week to complete an oil portrait working about 50 hours on it. I had a conversation with an artist who was doing quite well but he, I was sure, was a lesser artist than myself and people I knew agreed with me. He advised me to keep my factory job for now and then when I had about 6 pieces that I had poured my heart into then I should go around and enter them into art shows and regional contests to see how many awards I could get.

After that he advised me to have the works scanned by a quality printer and then have them print out poster size limited editions and sign and number them.

I followed his advice. I derived the majority of my income not from the sales of original oil paintings but from the sales of limited edition prints.

I now never sell my originals though occasionally take a commission. Most Authors sell only digital downloads of their audiobook. So, what if you want to figure out how many books someone else is selling, like an industry leader or your top competitor? The best you can do is guess how many copies that book is selling based on a very limited amount of public data. Be sure to choose the right Amazon store:. The calculator will give you an estimated monthly sales number for that edition of that book, given its overall rank.

This system is a lot better than nothing. It can give you a feel for how well a book is selling at any given moment, but it has its problems:. The more data points you use, the better the sales estimate. Kindle controls a huge portion of the digital market in both ebooks and audiobooks, so the Kindle estimate is a good indicator of digital sales. But even this can be off by a big factor, and print sales are even worse.

But everyone has a story to tell—and every potential Author should have the tools they need to do that. There are a lot of books that sell just a few copies, and there are a few books that sell a lot. But there are also a lot of great nonfiction books, both self-published and traditionally published, that never got any marketing.

As a result, the nonfiction market is all over the place. Some books sell a ton of copies, and some hardly sell any. There were about 5 million adult nonfiction print books sold in the United States per week during October and November of According to Bowker , more than 1 million books were self-published in alone. If most of those weekly sales were for books written in the last 3 years, and if something like half of all published books are nonfiction, that leaves more than 1.

Does that sound dismal? It just means you have to do more than write a good book and upload it to Amazon. You have to put some real effort into marketing and sales. In , our median title the middle book sold copies in the first week. The number is heavily skewed. Keep in mind that this number varies tremendously from one project to the next. Here are a few scenarios:. When we create a dedicated launch plan for a new book, we include a wide range of marketing efforts, including traditional media, social media, advertising, email lists, interviews, and blog tours, to name a few.

Obviously, the more of these you put together, the better your book will sell. After we publish a book, we transition the book to the Author, so we stop seeing direct sales numbers.

The average traditionally published non-fiction book sells about copies in the first year, but when we manage a book launch , our target is to sell 1, copies in the first 3 months. Why 1,? Because at that number of sales, a book has the momentum it needs to keep spreading by word of mouth.

BookBub is the most successful book promotion site by far, producing on average additional books on the day of the promotion during our test.

And, again, advertising can make a big difference. By comparison, the average traditionally published book sells 3, copies, but as I mentioned above, only about of those sales happen in the first year.

For a traditional publisher to think of a nonfiction book as a success, it has to sell more like 10, copies over its lifetime. But for a self-published Author who fully leverages the expertise, credibility, and profound connection that a great book offers, a handful of sales can bring in a lot of business.

Book sales are more of a marathon than a sprint. Sticking around with a decent number of sales week-in and week-out is a lot better than rocketing into the ranks for one day and then plummeting into obscurity. Authors who worry less about rank and more about consistently reaching the right people—people who will read and love their book—often end up with a much wider reach, and much more lucrative results. Keep in mind that each list has its own system for measuring sales numbers, so one bestselling list is not the same as another.

But you should keep in mind that total book sales are perhaps twice that of every number listed. There is plenty to be said about whether the publishing model could be more efficient, if middlemen could be cut out, etc. To begin with, publishers survive on a handful of hits.

Additionally, the publisher makes money before the author does. Take our example above. Of course, the press also has to pay for the printing costs of the book as well as any marketing costs or money spent on cover art before it can even pay the various employees that worked on the book… but you get the general idea.

Probably not surprisingly, the answer is… it really depends. This is true even for individual authors. Publishing is full of luck, timing, and unpredictable trends. I mean, adult coloring books? And even then, publishers give dramatically different amounts of support and marketing even to books published by the same imprint.

That qualification aside, most fiction books published by a traditional publisher garner somewhere between and , sales. Sometimes less, sometimes more. Most short story collections issued by big publishers get about half that: between 1, and 20, You can scale this down for publisher size.

An independent small press is averaging more like to 10, for novels and to 2, for story collections. For debut books, you could cut all those numbers in half. Do keep in mind that this is after at least a year of sales. Well… no. Like baseball salaries or box office returns, book sales are heavily skewed by the minority of books that do really well. If you go into your local bookstore and look at all the books on the various tables, most of those will BookScan between 2, and 40, after a couple years of sales.

The big books by the big names on the tables will get between , and a couple million. However, most books struggle to find adequate distribution, much less coverage.

Most books do not get placement on tables, and many do not even get to many bookstores at all. The majority of traditionally published novels sell only a couple thousand, if that, over their lifetime. As with anything here, we need qualifications. You also need to factor in the format. Selling 10, hardcover is worth more than 10, paperbacks. For ebooks, prices can be all over the place, even from a major publisher.

It should be easy for you to get another book contract. If you sold more than 5,, you are doing pretty well. If you sold less than 5,, then you could be in trouble with the next book. Although it is, as always, dependent on the project. If a publisher loves your next book, they may not care about previous sales.

The smaller the press, the more you can scale down. Even then, the publisher stressed, an author selling 3, is really just paying for themselves. How many books will you sell? Most people would be surprised at the drastic range of book sales even among the books that people are buzzing about. If you took the ten literary fiction books that all the critics, Twitter literati, and well-read friends are discussing, their BookScan numbers might range from a couple thousand to k.

Last year, NPR looked at the book sales of the Pulitzer Prize finalists and found the books ranged from under 3, to low six figures. I used instead of to make sure each book had at least 12 months of sales. No list is perfect, but the NYT list includes story collections and small press books alongside the big name literary authors and award contenders. The BookScan sales of those books literally ranged from 1, to 1. The next highest book was about , If we remove the best and worst selling books on the list, we get a mean of 46, copies and a median of 25, copies.

The actual sales totals will be moderately to significantly higher depending on the book, and all of these books should continue to sell copies over the years. Again, the range is huge. I looked up five years of nominees from to and the range was 5, to over 1. The mean was , and the median was 72,
