Why bar end shifters on touring bike




















Why is this? Most bikes these days have indexed shifters, this means you have preset outlined parameters to shift to. Think of this at the modern digital shifter. They have levers that you click one way to shift up and one way to shift down, so are also indexed.

I switched mine out in the end as i wanted to try some Kelly-take-offs instead, id be happy to go back tho on a touring bike. I use them on my tandems and tourer. They are light and simple which is perfect for long distance tours.

Downsides, they are a bit exposed to damage when in transit but I slip a bit of plastic pipe over bar ends when flying etc to avoid this. Getting very close to buying the LHT now…but might hold out for the Disc Trucker which will be available in the spring…. Bar end shifters are ace.

Each derailleur is connected to each shifter; where the front derailleur is attached to the shifter on the left and hooked to the back-end derailleur is the right shifter. When the index system operates properly, one can shift gears without much thought. Friction shifting is not as precise. Friction shifting may seem primitive and counter-intuitive, especially to new school riders, but it has unquestionable benefits for touring. This is beneficial because, on a tour, one may find themselves at locations that do not offer a large variety of chains, cassettes, and chainrings.

A front friction shifter can work with both a double and triple chainring at the front. The low gearing offered by a triple system is beneficial for touring cyclists carrying a lot of gear. Friction shifters do not require gear indexing. Conversely, index shifting requires more frequent maintenance in order for the system to operate properly.

As a result, the indexed gears often get out of tune and the chain starts rubbing. Friction shifters allow you to do that effectively which is why some people prefer to have one at the front. Note: There are also index shifters with a trim function, but not every model has it. Friction shifting gives you the opportunity to go from the smallest to the biggest cog of the cassette in one continuous swipe whereas index shifters require multiple presses to achieve the same result.

Friction shifters reduce the chances of experiencing problems when mixing different bicycle parts — a good option to have when going on a tour into the unknown. Drop bars are narrow. When you attach a wide basket or a bag to them, it may get in the way of a combo shifter.
