Why does rcd keep tripping




















The picture doesn't appear to include the circuit for the hob mentioned. Everything will 'leak' small amounts of current, so it could be a combination of things all 'leaking' together that is enough to go over whatever the RCD is tripping at.

The wind and lights flickering may suggest an external cause, in which case it wouldn't hurt to call the DNO to get them to confirm there are no problems with their supply.

If the wiring testing doesn't show up a cause, then individually PAT testing your appliances on the circuits in question may narrow it down, but otherwise it becomes a question of elimination. The picture is obscuring the rating of the RCD, but if it's 63A, then running what appears to be all your socket circuits from it isn't a great idea - though depending on what's connected it may not be a practical issue.

As he points out, and I think you already have a good grasp of, high rates of change of supply voltage cause proportionately high momentary currents through the capacitors, much higher than a steady-state 50Hz. That RCD has multiple socket-outlet circuits on, plus the normal leakage of the hob, so might be running close to its tripping threshold already.

If the rcd trips when one circuit breaker is on; something on that electrical circuit is faulty. Your rcd will hopefully reset after each circuit is isolated. The photo below contains two rcd units, six circuit breakers and the main switch — all housed inside a modern consumer unit.

The rcds power the three circuits to the left of them. So the rcd inside the yellow section will only trip if a fault exists on circuits 1 cooker , 2 sockets first floor and 3 first-floor lights. Likewise, if the rcd tripped inside the green section it would be because of an earth fault on 4, 5 or 6.

If you suspect your cooker circuit is causing your rcd problem then look for big red switches that will remove the live and neutral from appliances, in the same way, unplugging a faulty device from a socket outlet would. The fault within the electrical current generally is a result of faulty appliances, misuse of electrical equipment, circuit wiring or when there is a high load from a variety of appliances on that circuit.

It is important to note that whilst safety switches are reliable and can generally be trusted, they are not always necessarily fail-safe. It is good practice to conduct routine checks to ensure that they are all working as they should be. Once the button has been pressed it will trip the safety switch to OFF to demonstrate that it is working properly. If your circuit contains a refrigerator or air conditioning unit, wait a few minutes before resetting to avoid causing potential damage to the appliance.

If you notice that there are switches present that are off, turn the switches back on to reset them. The next step is to determine what has caused the issue through a process of elimination.

Note — If the safety switch and all circuit breakers are switched on but your electricity is out, contact your energy provider as the issue may lie with them.
